Communicate

Daily writing prompt
If you had to give one life-changing tip, what would it be?

We don’t live in the same world as before.

The art of communication has lost its beauty as people move toward an artificial world rather than the beautiful, natural world we were created in conjunction with.

We all know I prefer my food organic, but I also love organic interactions – genuine connections – actual conversation.

The relationships I have with the people I love most on this planet all started with some conversation, at some point in time.

I had relationships that I thought would be more meaningful, end in sheer disappointment as ghosting entered the room.

When did it become normal to just abandon someone you were in the middle of having a conversation with?

Communication has become something that almost has to be taught at this point – how to treat people respectfully in conversation, whether it be in personal relationships or in the workplace.

I was eating at Chipotle earlier this month and listened as all the employees were talking to each other and cussing in earshot of the whole dining room.

I wanted to tell them they had no sense of decorum, but I feared the reference would be lost, or they simply wouldn’t care.

If I had to give you one life-changing tip it would be to communicate.

Even when it’s

  • Hard
  • Sad
  • Maddening
  • Scary as a clown looking at you from a drainage gutter
  • Lame
  • Weird
  • Awkward
  • Strange

If we lose our ability to communicate appropriately, honestly, romantically, and everything in between, we lose our humanity.

If you couldn’t tell by now, this post hits home for me at the moment.

I, by nature, am a communicator. Verbally or in writing, you largely are going to know where I’m at.

I like to tell stories. I like to believe those stories are reaching you, that’s why you keep coming back here.

I just wish the communication was reciprocated.

I wish you hadn’t left the conversation, or I at least wish I knew why.

Lack of communication breaks more hearts than honesty ever could.

So today, my advice is to communicate with the people in your life.

  • Tell them you love them.
  • Set boundaries where needed.
  • Say something kind to a stranger.
  • Read the room where you are speaking.
  • Re-enter the conversation.

Whatever communication needs to happen in your life today, just do it.

And if you’re reading this, I hope you know that I’m not angry, I would just give anything to talk to you again and say what I actually should have said a year ago.
