A couple months after I separated from my ex, I was doing anything and everything I could to improve my health. Up until that point, I had been incredibly sedentary working in an office, and then remotely, from my house. I also had limitations in regards to my breathing and very rarely walked, let alone did any heavy exercising.
I had my plans to move to Tennessee, and get to a more comfortable elevation so I could be more active, but I still wanted to try and implement some changes while I was still living in Colorado.
My aunt, uncle, and cousin were in town visiting and we all decided to go do a family shopping trip at Scheels. Now for those of you who have never been to a Scheels, let me tell ya, it is one of my favorite stores (and I miss it dearly). Scheels sells everything from kayaks to snow boots, guns to basketball hoops. Since I had not been walking in so long, I never really paid attention to the type of shoes I was wearing, but my aunt reminded me how important it was for me to have a good pair of walking shoes.
At the time, On sneakers had become really popular, and if we needed proof, all the employees in Scheels were wearing them. I tried them on and they felt so comfortable compared to the Skechers I had been sporting the last few years, but I couldn’t bring myself to spend the $160+tax to get them.
My aunt said I needed them though and she bought them for me as a gift.
This was in April of 2022.
Now, I know you are supposed to replace walking shoes regularly to ensure you are getting the proper support, but I couldn’t bring myself to get rid of the Ons. It wasn’t until I met a dear friend at school, who used to sell shoes, that showed me that I might need a different type of walking shoe for my weird feet.
I have since converted to the Nimbus from ASICS for walking, but my Ons still remain one of my favorite pairs of shoes, because they were a gift from one of my favorite people, and they were the shoes I literally took my first steps in towards bettering my health. I even continued to use them over the last year as my kayaking shoes.
At some point that pair of sneakers will end up in the trash, but they will always hold that particular memory for me.
